Career Counseling and Career Assessments for Young Adults
Choosing a college major or career path can feel overwhelming. Many young adults struggle to become interested in a career unless they first believe they have the natural abilities to succeed in it.
This creates a common career-readiness dilemma:
"How can I feel confident pursuing a career if I do not know which fields align with my natural abilities, interests, and purpose?"
Our career counseling and assessment program for young adults in Nashville provides a structured discovery process. It helps high school students, college students, graduate students, recent graduates, and emerging professionals identify their strengths, explore compatible career paths, and make informed decisions about education and work.

Getting Unstuck from Career Uncertainty *
Young adults often feel stuck when trying to choose a major, plan their education, or enter the workforce. The pressure to make the right decision can interfere with clear thinking and make an already difficult choice feel unmanageable.
Career Uncertainty May Affect Young Adults Who Are
Choosing a college major but unsure which academic field fits them.
Considering changing majors because their current program feels misaligned.
Preparing for college without a clear educational or career direction.
Approaching graduation without confidence about what comes next.
Working in an unfulfilling job that does not use their strengths.
Seeking a meaningful career rather than simply accepting a paycheck.
Questioning their potential or struggling to recognize what they do well.
Without a clear understanding of their abilities, interests, values, and motivations, young adults may lack the confidence needed to make informed educational and career decisions and develop the competencies required for future success.
A Hope-Centered Career Discovery Process Built Around Four Questions
01
What are my natural abilities and strengths?
02
How can those abilities support potential career paths?
03
How do my strengths, interests, values, and motivations complement one another?
To learn more about the value of identifying your natural abilities, explore “Don’t Waste Your Talent.”
04
Why would a particular career path feel meaningful to me?
Answering these questions can lead to greater self-clarity, confidence, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. By understanding your strengths, values, purpose, and calling, you can pursue meaningful work with a stronger sense of direction and hope for the future.
The goal is not to tell someone what job to choose or promise success in a particular occupation. It is to provide useful evidence and guided reflection so each person can make more informed educational and career decisions.
Through education, training, and work experience, natural abilities can be developed into practical skills and professional competencies.
The Hope-Focused Career Assessment Model ©
Our individualized approach combines objective abilities assessment, narrative career assessment, one-on-one career counseling, and professional pathway exploration.
Together, these components help young adults understand what they may be naturally equipped to do, what motivates them, and which career possibilities deserve further investigation.
Abilities Assessment: Identifying Natural Strengths
An objective abilities battery measures a range of natural aptitudes and helps reveal patterns among them. Rather than relying only on interests or personality preferences, this assessment provides additional evidence about how an individual may approach reasoning, problem-solving, communication, and other types of work.
The results may help clients:
Identify measurable strengths that can be developed through education and experience.
Recognize combinations of abilities relevant to different work environments.
Explore compatible college majors and professional pathways.
Build confidence through a clearer understanding of their potential.
Evaluate options more intentionally before committing time and money.
Assessment results do not determine a person's future. They serve as one source of information within a broader career-planning process.
Our Young Adult Career Counseling Process
-
Our proprietary CCI Narrative © assessment supports guided self-reflection. It helps young adults explore who they are, what motivates them, which experiences have shaped them, and why particular career paths may matter.
The narrative process examines:
Personal interests and motivations
Values and beliefs
Meaningful life experiences
Educational and professional aspirations
Barriers contributing to career indecision
The type of contribution the individual hopes to make
By connecting measurable abilities with personal meaning, young adults can develop a more complete picture of their career identity and future direction.
-
The process begins with a one-on-one intake session. We discuss the individual's current situation, career concerns, educational history, and goals.
When someone feels stuck, we explore what may be interfering with progress. This may include uncertainty, low confidence, pressure from others, too many choices, or a lack of reliable career information.
-
We administer selected assessments to measure natural abilities and explore personal motivations. The findings provide a foundation for identifying educational options and career fields worth investigating.
Instead of using unsupported ideas about "left-brain" or "right-brain" dominance, we consider how measured abilities work together across different tasks and environments.
-
Assessment results are integrated into a comprehensive interpretation. During an extended debrief session, the young adult receives a personalized presentation explaining:
What the assessment results indicate
How different abilities complement one another
Which educational and career pathways may align
Why certain options may be personally meaningful
What questions require further exploration
The purpose is to translate assessment data into clear, practical insights.
-
Follow-up sessions help the client examine potential majors, occupations, work environments, and professional pathways. Together, we consider the education, skills, experience, and credentials associated with each option.
This stage helps young adults move from general self-awareness to an actionable career direction.
-
Each participant receives a customized bound report based on the program selected. The report may include assessment results, interpretations, career considerations, and recommended next steps.
This resource can support future conversations with parents, academic advisors, mentors, and other career-development professionals.
From Career Confusion to Confident Action
Our model examines how a young adult’s attitude can influence emotions and behaviors
Attitude -> Emotions -> Behavior
Attitude: Greater awareness of natural strengths can create a more constructive and realistic belief in one's potential.
Emotions: Increased clarity may reduce uncertainty and strengthen confidence, curiosity, and motivation.
Behavior: Greater confidence can encourage active career exploration, skill development, educational planning, networking, and relevant work experience.
The desired outcome is not simply choosing a job title. It is developing the self-knowledge and direction needed to prepare for a meaningful professional future.
Why Early Career Exploration Matters
Career planning is especially important because college decisions require substantial investments of time, effort, and money. Reliable evidence shows that career uncertainty is common.
About 30% of undergraduates who had declared a major changed it within three years of initial enrollment. NCES
The benefits of strong mentorship and meaningful college experiences can extend into graduates' careers and well-being. -Gallup
College costs vary significantly and are updated annually, making it important for families to review current cost-of-attendance estimates before making enrollment decisions.
These realities do not mean that every student must identify one permanent career before college. They do show the value of career assessment, informed exploration, mentorship, and experiential learning before making high-cost educational decisions.
